What law is, how it is thought, how it is interpreted, and how it is applied takes place with thing the parameters of African culture. The function of legal philosophy, writes Pound, is to rationally formulate a general theory of law which conforms to the interests, the general security first and foremost, of society.

According to Pound, philosophies of law historically have rationally adjusted legal. My purpose in this paper is to make a case for the strictly philosophical nature of our discipline, legal philosophy.

I first take a prior stance on the issue of what philosophy is in general and outline some premises for the definition of philosophical rationality. This then leads me to critically examine Bobbio’s dichotomy between jurists’ legal philosophy and philosophers’ legal. Philosophy of law, also called jurisprudence, branch of philosophy that investigates the nature of law, especially in its relation to human values, attitudes, practices, and political ionally, philosophy of law proceeds by articulating and defending propositions about law that are general and abstract—i.e., that are true not of a specific legal system at a particular time.

The authors have taught Legal Practice: Writing and Analysis at Georgetown University Law Center for a combined total of over forty years, and the advice and approaches contained in this manual reflect the teaching philosophy developed by the faculty in Georgetown’s legal writing.

This chapter explores the relation between Greek philosophy and classical Roman law, focusing on various currents as intellectual backgrounds to the works of individual jurists as well as apparently philosophical notions and theories present in the Roman legal sources.

These notions range from systematic considerations such as the subdivision of certain legal categories, to moral and ethical. Philosophy of law is a branch of philosophy that examines the nature of law and law's relationship to other systems of norms, especially ethics and political philosophy. It asks questions like "What is law?", "What are the criteria for legal validity?", and "What is the relationship between law and morality?"Philosophy of law and jurisprudence are often used interchangeably, though.
